Tier 1 participants are defined as those participants who first became a firefighter or paramedic in Article 6 prior to January 1, 2011.
Tier 2 participants are defined as those participants who first became a firefighter or paramedic in Article 6 on or after January 1, 2011.

Participants earn service credit in the Fund during all periods in which they perform the duties of their position. Click here for details.

The retirement annuity of a participant who is retiring is determined based on age, years of service and hiring date. Click here for an explanation of criteria.
Eligibility for widow's annuities requires that the widow be married to the Active/Retired participant at the date of his or her death and other conditions found in the statute. Click here for an explanation of criteria.
A participant who resigns or is discharged from service shall be entitled to a refund of their contributions to the annuity. Members seeking a refund should contact the Fund at benefits@fabf.org regarding the necessary requirements and application process. Click here for details.
The Fund pays an ordinary death benefit to the designated beneficiary or beneficiaries of deceased participants. Click Here for Details.

Under state law, the Firemen's Annuity and Benefit Fund of Chicago benefits may not be paid to anyone other than the member, except to an alternate payee pursuant to a valid Qualified Illinois Domestic Relations Order, commonly referred to as a “QILDRO.” Click here for more information regarding QILDRO’s.
